LIVING LIFE LIKE THERE'S NOTHING BETTER TO DO

the science of killing time

This world is so full of wonderful people and colorful things. There’s always going to be something lovely to find. There will always be awful things, too, because things of all sorts are always happening. The ratios of these things may seem somehow unfair. What needs to be understood is that the universe is not a machine. In fact, it may be the only, truly entropic and unpredictable thing to exist. While man is something more like a computer’s mind in an animal’s body, in the grand scheme of the universe, things simply happen. Time simply passes.

"I say progress is a synonym of time; we are all aware of it, but it's nothing we refined." (Progress - Bad Religion)

The great part of this is that time is always passing, no matter what it is we're doing with ourselves. It may come to feel a bit like wasting away, but the truth is: there really isn’t anything better to do. The only alternative is to die, and that manages to be an even greater waste of time. Death is always waiting for us; it will always be there when the time comes. No one gains anything from calling it early, and one only loses the ability to do something with their fraction of eternity.

To those of us who may feel that life is a drag, remember that death isn’t any more interesting and should not be considered as a reasonable alternative. I recommend you hold on to whatever makes your time feel enjoyable or well-spent, and never fear moving to slow. You have all the time in the world. Take your time to make music, write a book, watch movies, or just stare and think. The time will pass anyways.
Dinner is not over.
